A 'tax-home' is your regular place of business, not necessarily where you live. You qualify for tax-free travel reimbursements when working temporarily away from this location. To determine your tax-home in complex situations, the IRS considers: (1) where you conduct business from your residence, (2) if you maintain duplicate living expenses, and (3) if you maintain personal connections to your claimed tax-home area. Meeting all three factors strongly establishes your tax-home location. Consult payroll for guidance specific to your situation
Per diem pay is a fixed daily allowance that is provided to cover employee business travel expenses like meals and lodging. It replaces receipt-based reimbursement with standardized rates (often based on federal guidelines), simplifying expense management. When paid within approved limits for legitimate business travel, per diem payments are typically tax-free.
